TAN DINH CHURCH
Tan Dinh Church, officially known as the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is one of the oldest, largest, and most recognizable Catholic churches in Ho Chi Minh City. As the parish church of Tan Dinh Parish, one of the oldest Catholic communities in southern Vietnam, it has served generations of the faithful since the nineteenth century. Today, the church is admired not only for its vibrant pink façade but also for its rich history, beautiful architecture, and active parish life.
The origins of Tan Dinh Parish date back to 1861, when Catholic families began settling in the area as Saigon rapidly developed under French administration. As the congregation continued to grow, Father Donatien Éveillard initiated the construction of a larger church in 1875. After two years of dedicated fundraising and building, the present church was solemnly inaugurated in December 1876. In the late 1920s, the church underwent a major expansion under the direction of Father Jean-Baptiste Nguyễn Bá Tòng, who would later become the first Vietnamese bishop. This renovation enlarged the church while preserving its original character.
Architecturally, Tan Dinh Church is one of the finest examples of French colonial ecclesiastical architecture in Vietnam. Its design incorporates Romanesque foundations enriched with Gothic and Baroque influences, creating an elegant and distinctive appearance. The soaring central bell tower rises more than 50 metres above the city, while intricate decorative details, pointed arches, stained-glass windows, and ornamental columns add to its timeless beauty. The church’s iconic pink exterior, complemented by white architectural accents, has made it one of Ho Chi Minh City’s most photographed landmarks and an instantly recognizable symbol of Saigon.
The church is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a devotion that emphasizes Christ’s boundless love, mercy, and compassion for humanity. Throughout the year, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart is celebrated with great reverence by the parish community, reflecting the spiritual identity that has shaped Tan Dinh Parish for more than 160 years.
Beyond the main church, the parish complex includes a convent established by the Sisters of Saint Paul de Chartres, schools, and various pastoral facilities that have contributed significantly to Catholic education and charitable works in the city. These institutions have played an important role in serving both the local Catholic community and society at large.
Today, Tan Dinh Church continues to be a place where history, faith, and architecture come together in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. Beyond its iconic pink façade, the church invites pilgrims to deepen their devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus while discovering one of the oldest and most treasured Catholic communities in southern Vietnam.
