La Vang is located in the Dinh Cat Parish of Quang Tri Province, 6 km from Quang Tri Town and 58 km from Hue Ancient Capital. Today, Our Lady of La Vang is considered a major pilgrimage center for Catholics in Vietnam and is recognized by the Catholic Church. In addition, the church was elevated to the status of a Basilica by Pope John XXIII through the decree Magnonos on August 22, 1961.
In 1798, Our Lady appeared in La Vang in the form of a beautiful woman in gown, wearing the traditional Vietnamese áo dài dress and holding a child in her arms, with two angels beside her. Mother appeared to rescue her children in a disaster, teaching them to boil leaves from the trees to cure illness in the darkest period: the time of King Canh Thinh (Tay Son House when Catholics were executed in Vietnam. The “Our Lady’s Apparitions” occurs on the grass near the banyan tree where the parishioners were praying. Here, Our Lady also promised: “Mother has accepted your request. From now onwards, whoever comes to invoke her in this place, he or she will receive the blessing of his or her will. ”
Since then, every year, on August 15, La Vang will host a pilgrimage festival. Not only the parishioners in Dinh Cat parish but also the pilgrims will come to the Blessed Virgin Mary to pray Mother’s blessing as their will.
