Cathedral of Hanoi (official name: St Joseph’s Cathedral) is the cathedral of the archdiocese of Hanoi, where the archbishop’s seat is. This is also an ancient church in this city, often take place the religious activities of the parishioners of the archdiocese of Hanoi.
According to some historical documents, this land was formerly the land of Bao Thien Tu Pagoda (Bao Thien Pagoda) was built from the Ly Dynasty. This is a famous self-made capital of Dai Viet capital during the dynasties from Ly-Tran. By the Le-Nguyen period, this was still the place where Buddhist ceremonied for the nation’s security people …. According to the Hanoi Dictionary of Hanoi University, “The church floor was belonged to the famous Bao Thien pagoda. There is also a tower called Bao Thien tower.”
Originally, this church is named Saint Joseph’s Church because in 1678, Pope Innocent XI sanctified St. Joseph (foster father of Jesus) as patron saint of Vietnam and neighboring countries. Therefore, the largest church in Hanoi was honored as “St. Joseph’s Cathedral”. The inauguration ceremony was held properly at Christmas in Dinh Hoi (1887).
The church is now located at 40 Nha Chung Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi, on a large plot of land adjacent to the Archdiocese of Hanoi, St. Joseph’s Seminary in Hanoi, Pot.
