Ham Long Church, officially known as the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua, is one of the most important Catholic churches in central Hanoi. Located on Ham Long Street, not far from the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake, the church is a familiar spiritual home for local Catholics and a meaningful stop for pilgrims visiting the capital.

According to the Archdiocese of Hanoi, Ham Long Parish was established on 24 December 1934. The church is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, whose feast day is celebrated on 13 June. Construction of the present church began under the guidance of Fr. Joseph Dépaulis and the church was inaugurated on 7 May 1939.

Unlike many colonial-era churches in Vietnam that were designed by French architects, Ham Long Church is closely associated with a Vietnamese architect, Peter Ly Duc Than, also known as “Doc Than.” The church reflects a simple yet graceful architectural style, with a tall bell tower, pointed arches, stained-glass windows, and warm brick tones that create a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere.

The interior of the church is especially notable for its quiet dignity. The columns and altar decorations feature rope-like motifs, often associated with the Franciscan spirit of humility and simplicity. This detail is particularly meaningful because Saint Anthony of Padua was a Franciscan friar, known for his preaching, charity, and deep love for the poor.

Together with St. Joseph’s Cathedral and Cua Bac Church, Ham Long Church is often regarded as one of Hanoi’s three notable Catholic churches. Its central location, devotion to Saint Anthony, and simple spiritual beauty make it a worthwhile destination for anyone wishing to discover the Catholic heritage of Hanoi.

Today, Ham Long Church continues to serve the Catholic community of Hanoi while preserving its distinctive architectural character and Franciscan heritage. Dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, it remains a peaceful place where pilgrims can pray, reflect, and experience one of the capital’s historic Catholic churches.
