A Heartwarming Mid-Autumn Visit to the Nuoc Ngot Social Protection Center, Hue
In celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, we had the special opportunity to visit the Nuoc Ngot Social Protection Center in An Bang, Loc Thuy, Phu Loc, Thua Thien Hue.
The center has been managed by the Sisters for nearly 20 years. It serves as a nurturing and educational home for 67 children and young adults with challenging circumstances, most of whom have disabilities or autism. The Sisters have taken in these children from five nearby communes without regard to their religion, and some of the children belong to ethnic minority groups such as the Pa Co and Van Kieu from Khe Sanh, Quang Tri. Most of them range in age from 3 to 28 years old. Typically, children aged 16 to 18 leave the center to reintegrate into the community, making room for younger children.
The Sisters play a vital role, not only in providing care but also in teaching the children essential life skills, as many of them cannot attend mainstream schools due to their disabilities and challenging family conditions. Through patience and love, the Sisters have created a safe and supportive environment where the children can grow despite their limitations.
Challenges of Center
Out of the 67 children, 32 are diagnosed with autism, presenting unique challenges for the Sisters in implementing new teaching methods. Although the center is equipped with adequate facilities, there is a significant shortage of specialized personnel. Special education and rehabilitation require highly skilled professionals, but the center lacks the resources to attract or retain qualified staff, particularly in the fields of rehabilitation and therapy.
A Meaningful Mid-Autumn Celebration at Nuoc Ngot
On this Mid-Autumn Festival, we brought gifts to spread some joy to the children. However, the visit was not just about delivering presents. It was a chance to sit down with the Sisters and listen to the real struggles they face in operating the center. This deeper understanding allows us to think about long-term solutions—not only financial support but also partnering with experts who can help improve the educational and rehabilitation programs for the children.
Through shared compassion and a desire to help, we believe our efforts will empower the center to thrive, providing more opportunities for these children with special needs. Visits like these remind us that Vietnam Catholic Tours is not just about connecting people to spiritual destinations but also about bringing together kind-hearted individuals to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
