May – The Month of Mary: Discover Marian Shrines in Vietnam

May, traditionally known as the Month of Our Blessed Mother Mary, is a special time for Catholics around the world to honor the Virgin Mary with devotion, prayers, and acts of love.

It is a meaningful opportunity to return to sacred places, deepen one’s faith, and entrust our lives to Our Lady – the Mother who always walks with us.

If you are planning a spiritual journey during this special time, Vietnam Catholic Tours offers some of the most important Marian pilgrimage sites in the country.

1. Our Lady of La Vang – Basilica in Vietnam

In 1798, during the persecution of Catholics under King Canh Thinh, many faithful fled into the forest of La Vang. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to them as a beautiful woman wearing the Vietnamese áo dài, holding the Child Jesus, accompanied by angels.

She comforted them, instructed them to use local leaves as medicine, and promised: “Those who come here to pray will receive my blessings.”

Today, Our Lady of La Vang is recognized as the most important Catholic pilgrimage center in Vietnam and was elevated to a Minor Basilica in 1961 by Pope John XXIII. It remains a powerful symbol of faith, hope, and perseverance.

2. Our Lady of Tra Kieu – Protector of the Faithful

Located about 25 km from Da Nang, Tra Kieu is closely associated with the events of 1885, when the Catholic community was under siege.

According to local accounts, the faithful witnessed the Virgin Mary appearing and protecting them, enabling them to withstand the attack for 20 days.

Today, the statue of Our Lady stands on Buu Chau Hill, becoming a central pilgrimage site. One of the most significant events is the Marian procession, especially at May 13, 2026

  • 06:15 PM: Marian hymns
  • 06:30 PM: Bell ringing
  • 07:30 – 08:30 PM: Marian procession

This remains one of the most spiritually moving celebrations in Central Vietnam.

3. Our Lady of Sao Bien – Star of the Sea

The title “Star of the Sea” (Stella Maris) reflects Mary as a guiding light for those at sea.

In 2006, during Typhoon Xangsane, which struck Da Nang with devastating القوة, a statue of Our Lady located by the sea remained miraculously unharmed. This event strengthened the devotion of the faithful.

Following this, the shrine was officially established and has become an important pilgrimage site in the Diocese of Da Nang – especially meaningful for fishermen and coastal communities.

4. Our Lady of Mang Den – A Symbol of Healing and Faith

The statue of Our Lady of Mang Den was originally installed in 1971, inspired by Our Lady of Fatima. During the war, it was destroyed and left abandoned in the forest.

It was rediscovered in 2006 and later restored as a pilgrimage site. Notably, the statue is missing both arms, yet this has become a powerful symbol of suffering and sacrifice, faith beyond hardship and spiritual healing.

Today, Mang Den is widely known as a place where pilgrims come to seek peace, healing, and renewal.

5. Our Lady of Nui Cui – The Largest Marian Statue in Vietnam

Our Lady of Nui Cui is home to a monumental statue of the Virgin Mary, standing approximately 50 meters tall, making it the largest Marian statue in Vietnam.

Overlooking Trị An Lake, the site offers a peaceful and expansive environment, ideal for silent prayer and spiritual reflection. It has become a growing pilgrimage destination for Catholics across the country.
