Martyrs’ Tomb at Nuoc Ngot in Hue – A Memorial to the 44 Martyrs of 1883

Not every pilgrimage site is widely known or recognized. There are places that exist in silence, carrying within them stories preserved not through grand structures, but through history and faith itself.

Located peacefully in An Bang, Loc Thuy Commune, Phu Loc District, Hue, the Nuoc Ngot Martyrs’ Tomb is such a place. This ancient tomb quietly tells a deeply moving chapter of Vietnamese Catholic history.

Let Vietnam Catholic Tours accompany you in discovering the story of the Nuoc Ngot Martyrs’ Tomb – where a painful past has become a living testimony of faith.

1. The Pilgrimage Walk to Nuoc Ngot Martyrs’ Site

We had the opportunity to be introduced and guided by the Sisters to visit the martyrs’ tomb here, a truly meaningful and special experience.

From Nuoc Ngot Parish or the nearby social protection center, visitors may walk approximately 700 meters to 1 kilometer to reach the martyrs’ site and uncover its historical story. There are no large signboards or tourist facilities; the journey itself feels personal, quiet, and reflective.

Along the way, you will pass through peaceful village paths, lined with simple local homes, open surroundings, and rows of casuarina trees typical of this region. All of these elements create a humble yet contemplative atmosphere, as if preparing your heart for an encounter with history.

2. The Story of the 44 Martyrs of Nuoc Ngot (1883)

This area was once the location of the old Nuoc Ngot church – a site closely connected to the historical events of 1883. At the center of this land stands a sacred tomb, built directly upon an ancient well.

In the history of the Catholic Church in Vietnam, there were times when the faith was severely tested. The events at Nuoc Ngot in 1883 remain a memory still preserved today.

On December 8, 1883, Father Giuse Tống Văn Vĩnh and 43 parishioners sought refuge in the old Nuoc Ngot church. Yet that place of shelter became the place where they offered their lives:

  • Father Vĩnh was killed, and his body was placed into the well within the church grounds
  • The 43 parishioners perished when the church was set on fire

Though this was a tragic event, the story does not end in loss, but becomes a powerful testimony of faith.

After the event, in remembrance of those who had sacrificed their lives, the local Catholic community built the martyrs’ tomb directly over that very well. From then on, the Nuoc Ngot Martyrs’ Tomb transformed from a place marked by suffering into a place of prayer; a memory of loss became a sacred sign.

The well is no longer simply a part of the past it has become the heart of a story of faith preserved through generations.

3. The Present Setting: Silence and Sacredness

Today, the Nuoc Ngot Martyrs’ Tomb stands within a setting of great simplicity: not crowded, not noisy. Surrounding it are local homes, greenery, and the peaceful rhythm of village life.

It is precisely this silence that makes the place a unique stop for pilgrims – a place to pause, to pray, and to reflect on the courage and faith of those who came before.

After the historical events, Nuoc Ngot Church was relocated to a higher area and rebuilt as it stands today. Meanwhile, the old site and the martyrs’ tomb have been preserved as a sacred foundation – where past and present meet in silence.

The Nuoc Ngot Martyrs’ Tomb is not distinguished by its size or fame. Yet it is exactly this simplicity and quietness that give it its profound value. This is not merely a place to visit, but a place to be still and to encounter a living history preserved through faith.
